Remarkable. An epic of a volleyball game, clocking in at well over two hours, and Brazil have done it. They've done for me as well, that is it for Day One at the Olympic Games.

If you were wondering, which you are, the players wearing the different coloured shirts from their team-mates are the designated 'libero' who are defensive players not allowed over the halfway line. I was first introduced to the word libero by a console football game of the mid 1990s. A ball-playing, flamboyant centre half a la Franco Baresi. As an Englishman brought up on the likes of Mark Wright and Neil Ruddock I didn't really know what they were supposed to be.

Natalie Stafford is sporting a monster of a shiner on her left eye, but she sinks two free-throws to bring Great Britain over the 40-point mark. Australia are always able to respond it seems though, and just maintain that lead at around the 10-point mark.

Paula Radcliffe is still hoping to run in the marathon, but her fitness is a concern.

Reigning Olympic time trial cycling champion Fabian Cancellara fears he may have to pull out of the Games after crashing during the men's road race.

The Swiss slammed hard into a barrier after badly negotiating a right-hand bend and injured his shoulder.

He said on Twitter: "Have no words left. The tears are stronger then the pain. Now we are waiting in the polyclinic in the athletes' village for the X-ray."

So that could be good news for Bradley Wiggins then.

Great Britain's Joanna Parker and Paul Drinkhall both won their first-round singles matches on the opening day of table tennis action at the ExCel Arena.

Parker, Britain's only representative in the women's singles, beat Brazil's Caroline Kumahara 4-0 to book a second-round clash with world number 47 Kristin Silbereisen.

Drinkhall, Britain's only competitor in the men's singles, beat Kuwait's Ibrahem Al-Hasan, also in straight games, and plays Zi Yang of Singapore next.

What's happened to British tennis? Was it not only a month ago that everything looked rosy over in SW19 thanks to Andy Murray's progress to the Wimbledon final and Jonny Marray's triumph in the men's doubles? Ok, maybe the flowers in the garden weren't in full bloom... Anyway, Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins are out after a 7-5 6-3 first round defeat by France's Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet.

Italy's good day is being made to look slightly worse by this storming show from China in the pool. They have now four golds, and six overall, to take the lead at the top of the standings. Where they will probably stay for the next 16 days...

There is only one more medal to come today, and it will be in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay. Great Britain's women are in the final, in lane eight. Go on girls.

Laura Robson and Heather Watson are regarded as the future of British tennis and the pair are performing well against German duo Angelique Kerber and Sabine Lisicki. The match on Wimbledon's Court 12 is with serve in the deciding set after the Germans bounced back in the second set, following a storming 6-1 first set from the Brits.

China's Ye Shiwen destroys the field and breaks the world record in style.

Italy have had a storming day then. That is their second gold of the day following their dramatic win in the men's team archery, and they have bagged five medals overall, which is more than anyone else.

They have won with swords and bows and arrows. Don't mess with the Italians.

Elisa Di Francisca takes fencing gold after beating her compatriot Arianna Errigo in the final.

The women's fencing individual foil final has gone to a sudden-death style battle - not literally, but you get my drift - after the two Italians were locked at 11-11 at the end of the third period.

The set by the way looks like something out of Tron, all black with flashes of red and green. Another good effort from the organisers.

Sensible advice in general to be honest, but it's a point being proven further today. The Italians are on for a clean sweep of the medals in the women's individual foil. We've already seen Valentina Vezzali take the bronze, and her compatriots Arianna Errigo and Elisa Di Francisca are currently battling out for the gold.

The beach volleyball graphic tends to grab your attention - but stay with me when I tell you I'm talking about the male version for a moment.

The most decorated Olympian in the sport's history is due on court at Horse Guards Parade at 20:00 BST. His name is Ricardo and he prances on the sand. The Brazilian has won a gold, silver and a bronze in the last three Games. Class act.

Valentina Vezzali picks up the bronze medal after beating Hyun Hee Nam of Korea 13-12. Vezzali was looking for a fourth consecutive gold medal, a feat which would have put her in Steve Redgrave territory as an absolute legend, but it wasn't to be.

GB's women are 11-5 down in their historic handball match - but they've got time to turn it around. Bit rusty on hanball? I was too until I popped in this morning. I can confirm it's a fantastic watch, like watching Barcelona play 5-a-side, only more brutal. It's high-paced, intricate stuff, with some crunching hits for good measure.

On BBC One: "The British team were a victim of their own success. The same tactics worked at the World Championships [where Cavendish won gold] last year and then in the Tour de France Cavendish battered them on the Champs Elysees in Paris. There were eight riders helping in Copenhagen last year, just four today and while four people can influence a race, they cannot control it.

"The problem is nobody wanted to ride against Cavendish on the Mall because they knew they would come second. The team did everything they could, other riders did not contribute to the race and they missed out too. Andre Greipel is the second best sprinter in the world but he and his German team sat back."
